Statement of Recruiting Philosophy
Saint Louis University's recruiting philosophy in recruiting top athletes is guided by the highest standards and ideals of integrity, sportspersonship, ethical conduct, equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities, academic excellence and athletics achievement. Our recruiting philosophy is driven by our commitment to develop the whole person (body, mind and spirit) in accord with the Catholic, Jesuit mission of Saint Louis University.
Method Used to Develop Policies
- Guided by the NCAA legislation regarding prospects' visits, our institutional policies have evolved through a continual process of reviewing, updating and revising with input from our experiences as an institution, the experience of institutional staff and coaches, feedback from peer institutions, and advice from conference offices.
- Discussion and feedback from our senior staff.
- Discussion and feedback from all our coaches.
- Discussion and feedback from our Student Athlete Advisory Board on behalf of student-athletes.
- Compilation of feedback from various stakeholders.
Description of Educational Component
- Prospect meets with Director of Academic Services to discuss academic support plans and other academic issues.
- Provide opportunity for prospect to attend a class during the regular school day with a host.
- Prospect who is transferring from 2-year or 4-year institutions meets with Director of Compliance to discuss their unique transfer requirements.
- Provide opportunity for prospect to meet with pertinent academic officials, including the Provost, a Dean, department chair or faculty member.

Pre-communication with prospects and parents (legal guardians)
- A letter describing the parameters of the visit and the NCAA bylaws that detail the length and number of visits is sent to the prospect before the prospect arrives on campus.
- The coach is expected to discuss the format of the prospect's visit with the prospect prior to their arrival, including behavioral expectations and standards.
Forms and receipt policies used
- All student-athletes sign a form as a part of their initial compliance meeting stating that they are aware of and responsible for the information in the student athlete handbook, which includes the institution's written policy on being a student-athlete host.
- When a student-athlete is chosen to host a prospect, the student-athlete signs a form specifically reminding them of the institutional policies surrounding official visits as well as the applicable NCAA rules that govern their behavior. This form is submitted with the other official visit forms. See attachment #4.
- The coach submits a form detailing all money spent during the official visit. This form includes:
a. Information on how and when the prospect traveled to and from campus,
b. Details surrounding each meal (the location, the cost, the people present at the meal) [No alcoholic beverages will be reimbursed by Saint Louis University.],
c. Specifics on the accommodations of the prospect and their family (the location, the cost, who was accommodated and who arranged the accommodations), and
d. Any other expenditures with explanation.
e. Itemized receipts are included with the reimbursement forms, which accompany the compliance forms and are submitted to the Senior Associate Athletics Director. See attachment #5.
- The coach also has the prospect sign a form attesting to the parameters of the visit to assure that the prospect has awareness around the visit policies and NCAA rules. See attachment #6.
- The student-athlete host signs the Expense Report form stating the money was used for allowable entertainment only and verifying the amount of entertainment money issued. See attachment #7.
Participation of head coaches to communicate standards and policies
- The coach is expected to discuss the format of the prospect's visit with the prospect prior to their arrival, including behavioral expectations and standards.
- The coach submits an itinerary of the official visit to the Director of Compliance prior to the visit.
- The coach reviews host instructions with student-athlete hosts prior to visit and secures proper signatures on Host Instructions Form.
- The coach must secure the signature of the prospect while on their visit attesting to their knowledge of what is expected and allowed on their official visit.
Sanctions for Non-Compliance
- If a violation of the Student-Athlete Prospect Visit Policies occurs, the coach will be required to have a meeting with the Senior Associate Athletics Director and/or the Director of Compliance to discuss the incident and assure full knowledge and understanding of the policies.
- Additional violations of the Student-Athlete Prospect Visit Policies will have an impact on a coach's annual evaluation. In addition it will result in a meeting with the Athletics Director and a letter of admonishment being placed in the coach's file.
- All violations of the policy will be kept on file and submitted annually to the Conference office by June 1 by the Director of Compliance.
