Community Service

At Saint Louis University, we live true to the Jesuit tradition. When our student-athletes are not providing entertainment in various venues, they are in the St. Louis community sharing the knowledge of their respective sports and providing a bright light in the lives of other.

SLU student-athletes volunteer and serve the community in a variety of ways. From visiting and aiding those who are ill or less fortunate to conducting clinics and signing autographs, Billiken student-athletes strive to put a smile on the faces of those they serve.

This effort is in conjunction with the University's mission of community service. In its most recent survey for the 2001-02 academic year, Saint Louis University reported that its students, faculty and staff members provided nearly 500,000 service hours to groups and individuals in the greater St. Louis area. Nearly 9,000 members of the University community participated in outreach programs. University volunteers assisted nearly 3,000 churches and social service agencies. Student fund raising for charitable organizations was more than $30,000.

Started in August 2003, the Billiken Caravan is the community relations platform for the department of athletics. It involves coaches, student-athletes and administrators in various appearances throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. The traveling service plan is the first that unifies the department and supplements each team's individual service projects.

Below is a list of some of the organizations assisted by Billiken student-athletes. In addition to these are numerous requested public appearances for our student-athletes. The Billikens also visit with young people in conjunction with the athletic department's Sporting Geography program. In that program, students learn geography by following the Billikens' travels throughout the soccer and basketball seasons.

Whether the purpose is to speak to grade school children on the importance of education or just sharing a story with elementary students, Saint Louis University student-athletes take pride in serving others.
